ALAN Celebrates Achievements on Anniversary

Minneapolis, Oct. 22, 2009 – This month, the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) celebrates four years of engaging the supply chain community to assist in humanitarian relief efforts. Founded in October of 2005, the non-profit organization has already made an impact on the lives of many disaster victims.

ALAN serves as a primary point of industry contact for disaster relief support and establishes an efficient process for providing the necessary goods and services through its web portal, www.alanaid.org. Needs for supply chain expertise, products, equipment, and services such as transportation, warehousing and material handling are matched with available donations. ALAN draws on its network of 14 leading supply chain organizations for these resources and works closely with the National Donations Management Network and National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army to coordinate relief efforts.

The ALAN organization evolved in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A group of concerned industry professionals recognized the value that the supply chain community could provide in times of crisis and sought to establish an efficient system for distributing much-needed donations that pour in from around the country. Founding members include: John T. (“Jock”) Menzies, The Terminal Corporation; Mark Richards, Associated Warehouses Inc. (AWI); Richard Sharpe, Competitive Logistics LLC; Cliff Otto, Saddle Creek Corporation; Cheryl Harrity, Performance Consultants; and Eugene Klein, retired from Sysco Corporation.

"We wanted to do something to give back – something that would have a positive impact and make those in our profession proud," said Mark Richards, ALAN vice president and vice president of Associated Warehouses Inc.

Since its inception, ALAN has contributed to numerous relief efforts, including:

  • bringing together Feed the Children and vendors of Limited Brands to deliver relief supplies to victims in American Samoa after the September tsunami
  • assisting with transportation and logistics to deliver protective firefighting gear donated by Montgomery County MD to Haitian firefighters
  • transporting hospital beds for Central Maryland ARC
  • working with Menlo Worldwide Logistics to distribute pallets of bottled water to Feeding America food banks across the country
  • helping Invacare Corporation connect with Catholic Charities and donate much-needed mattresses, wheelchairs and walkers for disaster relief after Hurricane Gustav

“We’ve reached out to a wide range of industry associations and aid organizations to create a vibrant network of compassionate and committed professionals,” said Jock Menzies. “It is so rewarding to see our efforts pay such great dividends so quickly. The fact that so many individuals and organizations are interested in making a difference is truly a testament to our industry.”
