Saddle Creek to Build New Cross-Dock for Warehouse Club
Lakeland, Fla., Sept. 13, 2007 —Saddle Creek Corp. announced today that the company will build and manage a new cross-dock facility in Hattiesburg, Miss. for a leading national warehouse club. Saddle Creek, a third-party logistics company that provides integrated warehousing, transportation, contract packaging, and logistics services, has started construction of the new 60,000-square-foot, high-volume cross-dock facility for Sam’s Club in Hattiesburg.
This is the third cross-dock facility that Saddle Creek will manage for Sam’s Club. The company has managed cross-dock operations for the retailer in Lakeland, Fla. for 16 years and in Villa Rica, Ga. for 12 years.
“Saddle Creek has the necessary resources and integrated capabilities to provide an effective logistics solution for this type of operation,” said Cliff Otto, president of Saddle Creek Corp. “Our construction of this new facility is one more example of Saddle Creek’s commitment to our relationship with Sam’s Club. “Our continued business growth in the Southeast and desire to reduce transportation costs have driven our decision to add another cross-dock facility,” said Jason Himmer, district manager at Sam’s Club. “We have a successful history with Saddle Creek and look forward to building on that.”
Construction is projected to be complete by May 2008. With the high volume of products anticipated to move through this facility, Saddle Creek anticipates that a workforce of 55 associates will keep the facility operating seven days a week.
The fact that a third party, such as Saddle Creek, is building and managing a facility on behalf of this large retailer is an indication of the increasing practice of cross-docking. In fact, according to a recent survey of food logistics industry executives, nearly 43 percent of respondents have increased cross-docking practices in the past five years.
